Meet Alessa, a resilient 17-year-old who arrived in Australia in early 2024 after fleeing her home country with her family.
Before the war began, Alessa’s life was filled with hope and ambition. She understood the value of education and dreamed of becoming a teacher, just like her mother.
But Life changed overnight.Alessa recalls the moment she knew life would never be the same again, “One night, I went to sleep and woke up to the sound of bombs falling. We turned on the news and found out that the war had begun.”
Two weeks later, Alessa and her family were forced to leave their home, forever.
“We moved to the church, and over the next six months, everything we had was destroyed. Our home, my father’s pharmacy, the school where my mother taught… Everything was gone.”
The family fled to a neighbouring country and applied for a visa to come to Australia.
In early 2024, their visa was granted, and they arrived in Australia, ready to start fresh.
But starting school late in the year, combined with other challenges, caused Alessa to fall behind on her studies.
Despite their best efforts, Alessa’s parents struggled to find work, and the high cost of tutoring in Australia meant Alessa would continue to fall further behind.
“I was struggling to keep up with my schoolwork and knew I needed help. I found Youth in Motion and was so happy to receive free tutoring!”
Alessa’s twin brother also benefits from free tutoring provided by Youth in Motion. This family has so much potential to achieve great things, but they need your help.

“I’m hoping to get a scholarship to a good university and get a degree in Education. I want to be a teacher like my mother and help the next generation achieve their dreams.”
